ABSTRACT

In the current era, medicinal plants are the major resources of indigenous medicines in the traditional medicine system and are playing an important role. Over 80% of the world population mainly depend only on traditional/folk medicinal plants for plant-based medicines to control many of the diseases and their extracts for health care. In the present study, the medicinal plants commonly used by the local people and traditional practitioners of Kappathgudda area, Gadag District, North Karnataka region for treatment of Asthma viz. Acalypha indica L., Datura metel L. and Tylophora indica belongs to Euphorbiaceous, Solanaceae and Asclepiadaceae families were selected for elemental analysis due to its wider application in the traditional medicinal system. Analytical Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer technique was adopted for the determination of various elements and indicated that Fe, Ca, K, Mg, Ti, Mn, V, Zn, Cu and Cd were present in all samples. The obtained results also revealed that the mineral and trace elemental contents were well within the permissible range and hence the medicinal plants are safe to be utilized in the drug formulations.

ABSTRACT

The incidence of thyroid lesions is increasing significantly nowadays. Many a times, differentiation between physiological, inflammatory, autoimmune, hyperfunctioning and hypofunctioning of thyroid gland, benign and malignant tumor poses diagnostic difficulty. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) with clinical correlation, along with ultrasonography and thyroid function tests are done in relevant cases. Final diagnosis requires morphological examination of the lesions. FNAC is widely accepted and has become the cornerstone in evaluation of the thyroid lesions, as unnecessary surgery can be avoided. We studied a total of 251 cases in the age range of 3 years to 72 years, who presented with thyroid swelling over a period of one year and got a spectrum of thyroid lesions on cytology. Incidence was more in females 230 cases (91.63%) compared to males 21 cases (8.36%). Nodular goiter was the commonest disease constituting 127 cases (50.59%) followed by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis 93 cases (33.05%) and malignancy was reported in 7 cases (2.78%). USG guided FNAC for optimization of results is necessary for the location of target lesion. Careful searching for malignant cells and repeat FNAC are the key to a successful diagnosis and to plan a proper surgical procedure. Follow-up is necessary in case of a benign mass.

ABSTRACT

We report a case of erythema induratum recently encountered in our centre. A 14-year male presented with history of fever, weight loss and multiple, painful, hyperpigmented patches over both legs and dorsum of foot, since six months. FNAC showed evidence of granulomatous inflammation. Biopsy of the lesion showed skin with inflammatory infiltrate in the deep dermis composed predominantly of epithelioid granulomas, Langhan’s giant cells and mature lymphocytes. A strongly positive Mantoux test and elevated TB IgG and IgM antibody levels suggested tuberculosis . The patient responded well to a course of anti-tuberculous therapy with marked resolution of the lesions.

ABSTRACT

Studies on collagen in heart are important to understand the pathogenesis of myocardial necrosis and to evaluate cardiac function in infarcted heart. The present study has been undertaken to find out the alterations in collagen types in heart as well as serum proteins during myocardial injury in rats. A decreased collagen content was observed on day one which may be due to increased secretion of collagenase and proteases from inflammatory cells or from the myocardium. The changes noticed in the collagen types (I, III and V) indicated the altered elasticity of the heart. Histological studies were observed to correlate well with the biochemical changes in collagen. Evaluation of myocardial collagen could provide new approaches to the treatment of infarct size reduction.
